Moscow courtyard - Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov. 64.5x80.1
Moscow Courtyard - the most famous painting by Polenov, in which the path of Russian art of the 1870s was first outlined, striving to dissolve the genre principle characteristic of the realists of the Wanderers. Polenov displayed a typical corner of the old patriarchal Moscowseen on a summer sunny morning. In the picture we see the current Church of the Savior in Sands near Arbat, an old manor house with a lush garden, dilapidated squinting sheds, a large courtyard where children play, a woman with a bucket going towards carefree walking hens — the coexistence of large and small worlds, which is amazing It embodies the image of Moscow of the 19th century with a rural way of life. Nothing escapes the sight of the painter, and this whole harmonious idyllic world is carefully and lovingly conveyed with the help of bright air plein air painting.
The painting was accepted at the Sixth Traveling Art Exhibition; the author was very embarrassed that such a mundane story, created under the impression quickly, easily and without much difficulty, interested the Partnership of such venerable artists as K. E. Makovsky, A. K. Savrasov, I. N. Kramskoy, N. Ge and others . The canvas was a success, soon it was bought by P. M. Tretyakov for his collection.
