Visit - Peter de Hoch. 67.9x58.4

Having painted most of his life with scenes of burgher life, Peter de Hoch was one of those who are called the “Little Dutch”. The themes of his works are usually simple - the hostess talks with the maid, the mother feeds the child, friends play cards. In the picture "Visit" the artist, presenting a scene from everyday life in the interior of a typical Dutch house so beloved by him, unfolded a story.

Interestingly, the lower half of the window is closed by shutters, which means that the owners want to hide something from prying eyes. A man who has come to visit holds a mistress by the hand, who, smiling, looks into his eyes. The matter between them was most likely about matchmaking or a pleasant meeting, and the issue was decided by mutual agreement. The maid pours wine to mark the event, another guest is joyfully telling her something.

The color of this painting is based on a combination of muted interior tones and bright clothes - red, blue, yellow and white. White, golden yellow and deep black, which de Hoch often used, came together in the guest attire. A man sits on a blue cushion, the color of which in combination with yellow and white is often found in the works of Vermeer Delftsky. From this contemporaneous love for the subtle use of vibrant colors and daylight illumination of interiors in paintings was transferred to de Hoch.
