Peasant women with brushwood - Jean-Francois Millet. 37.5x29.5

Many of the paintings by Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875), like the Lenin brothers, are dedicated to peasants and their work. However, the characters of the painter do not have that calm and confidence that the Lenin heroes possessed, their life is painted in more dramatic and gloomy tones. Millet usually writes peasants engaged in daily work. The author has repeatedly used the plot with a poor man, bent under the weight of a bundle of brushwood.

In the painting "Peasant Women with Brushwood" two female figures are depicted, slowly wandering with huge bundles along a forest path. Shadow tones determine the joyless mood of the canvas. The surrounding landscape is barely distinguishable: the dark verticals of trees, piled stones on the right, the feeling of a cold evening - an image of harsh nature looms from these details. Large monumental forms, a generalized laconic drawing, slow and solid movement - there is no hint of sentimentality in the work, everything is sustained in one mournful way.

Once Millet admitted to a friend that he never reveals the bright side of life and he never saw it and does not know what it is. These are the words of the artist involuntarily recalled when looking at the picture presented.
