Dinner - Leo Samoilovich Bakst. 150 x 100 cm

The master who worked at the beginning of the twentieth century, Leo Samoilovich Bakst (his real name is Rosenberg) went down in the history of Russian art as a theater artist rather than an easel painter. Having made dozens of performances for S. P. Diaghilev’s “Russian Seasons” in Paris, Bakst gave the theater and decoration art its independent sound on stage. The extravaganza of colors and the luxury of the costumes created by the artist made the French press of the 1900-1910s exclaim: “Paris was truly drunk by Bakst!”

The easel work of the master is mainly devoted to the portrait genre and captures the circle of relatives and friends of the artist. In the work “Dinner” depicts the wife of the outstanding artist, critic and founder of the World of Art association A.N. Benois - Anna Karlovna Kind (nicknamed simply Atya by home and friends).

The silhouette and emphasized graphic lines, the contrast of the white interior, the black outfit of a young woman and red accents on her hair and oranges create a style of the early twentieth century. The fashion for laconicism of visual media was largely formed thanks to the widely spread and popular book graphics and advertising. Bakst became one of the expressors of the tastes of his time.
