Admired by the beauty of the Florence Cathedral, tourists are sure that they saw all the most important in Florence. The originals of many of the cathedral's masterpieces are kept in the Cathedral Museum, which is located behind the brilliant Brunelleschi temple.

In the building where the museum is located, the offices of the construction administration, several apartments for architects, workshops of sculptors and artists were located. Today, in addition to the museum, restoration workshops are located here. Guides say that it was in this building that Michelangelo sculpted his David.

The basis of the exhibition is all kinds of layouts, drawings, documents related to the construction of the cathedral. Here is a large collection of all kinds of building mechanisms of the Renaissance. But the main thing in the exposition is not even that.

The originals of the work of Donatello, Michelangelo, Bandinelli and many others. Among the works of the creator of the Vatican, special attention should be paid to the composition of Pieta with Nicodemus, which remained unfinished. Buonarotti wanted this particular composition to adorn his grave, but did not have time to completely complete it. Today, sculpture is central to the Cathedral Museum.

Doors decorated with bas-reliefs of Ghiberti, the so-called gates of paradise, amaze with skill, accuracy and realism.

The museum has a rich archive. In addition to project documentation, unique medieval church books and orders of construction managers are stored here. The music archive of the museum is huge. Here are collections of sacred music, choral scores from 1300 to the beginning of the 20th century. Collections compiled by the best bandmasters of the cathedral during the seven centuries of the cathedral’s existence.

Restoration workshops today are located in the place where sculptures were created for the cathedral. A special atmosphere has been preserved here, an excellent collection of sculptors' tools has been collected.

The museum is actively organizing. Dozens of exhibitions, conferences, seminars and workshops are held annually. The festival of sacred music is also one of the brainchild of the museum.

Currently, the museum is closed for reconstruction. Opening is expected in the fall of 2015. After the reconstruction, the area for the exhibition will increase, the museum will be equipped with electronic devices, as well as touch screens. Currently, only restoration workshops can be visited upon reservation.
